Can I sue for my employer leaking information?

My employment was terminated approximately 1 year ago. I have always heard that it was illegal for an employer to discuss terms and reasons for termination with other employees, however, I recently met a former fellow employee who says that he knew that I was terminated from the job, even though he was NOT in my department and had no reasonable right to know that I had left or under what circumstances. Can I bring some kind of legal charges against my former employer for leaking this information to people that should not have that information?

They can release any information they want as long as it is true.

dear can i sue, if the information being leaked is true, you probably would not have a worthwhile claim for invation of privacy. you would have to prove that the information leaked somehow damaged you. if the informatio nis protected by a statutory privilege, such as medical information, you would have a worthy claim, even if you were not damaged by the information. how much your claim is worth is an important factor to examin, however. if the information is false, you have an old-fashioned defamation claim, and you would not have to prove the information damaged you. if the false information was given to a successor or prospective employer, you also would have a statutory claim for damages.
