Employer Refusing To Itemize Paystubs

I am a painter working through a union. My employer continually pays me late. He also does not itemize my deductions. He does not contribute my taxes and does not take out my union dues. The union is very weak and has not done anything. The year-to-date column does not reflect the accurate amount earned, nor the deductions and I cannot even tell how much I am being paid per hour. If I demand payment in writing, can I be fired and will I lose my unemployment? I have already verbally demanded proper paychecks to no avail.

you do have remedies

you have remedies under california law. if this is happening to a number of employees, that is, it's a pattern and practice throughout the company, you need to talk to an attorney experienced in employment law. you can call me at 805-658-0655 for a free telephone consultation.
if this is happening only to yourself, you can file claims with the labor board (dept. of labor standards enforcement) and the edd (employment development dept.), both in the california pages of your phone book. the edd will audit an employer who is not withholding, accounting for, or paying payroll taxes properly. they also audit to see that employees are properly classified (i.e., if they are really employees, they're not being shown as indy contractors).
an edd audit is an employer's worst nightmare. even the irs will defer to an edd audit.
if you aredisciplined, fired, or retaliated against in any way for reporting these violations, you should contact an attorney experienced in employment law.
good luck
