SEVERANCE PAY

A friend of mine was laid off today and was told not to come back on Monday. The reason is the small business that he works for is cutting costs. They are letting him go with no severance pay or earned vacation pay from last year. He is in Queens NY. I have searched the internet for the NY State law governing this but cannot find anything. Please help, does he have any recourse.

Severance Pay

In New York State, terminated employees have no right to severance pay.

However, a terminated employee is entitled to payment of earned but unused vacation time at the time of termination. In failing to pay unused vacation time, the employer would be violating the New York State Labor Law.
