Termination for making a few data entry errors with nothing to tie back to
I have taken a new position at my company. I have been an employee for 10 years. In this new position I have had little to no training from my supervisors or guidance. I know that I have made a few mistake and have been "counseled" on my mistakes. I am now on a 45 day probation period with the possibility of being terminated. I have never heard of this policy at my company. They never publish any thing like this or tell you af any consequesnces. In my "verbal counseling" it was never discussed that I could be terminated and my supervisor said that it more than likely wouold not happen, but I had to sign a statement that I was not allowed to make a copy of and it stated that termination was an option. I don't think that this is fair and in the same statement it was stated that I was gifted and a valuable employee. I am confused.

In Texas, employers have all the rights -- or just about all. It's called "employment at will," but should be called "firing at will." Unless you have an employment contract, or are a member of a union, you can be fired without warning for a good reason, bad reason, or no reason at all. The employer has the right to be mean-spirited, unfair, and even stupid. There are only a few laws that give employees any rights at all: if an employer's decision is based on illegal prejudice, or in retaliation for certain activities, then the employee might be able to successfully fight the termination. There are many exceptions to this "at will" doctrine -- and no time to go through them all here.
