harassment

Since November 2007 I have been the store manager for a local skate/snowboard shop. The owner of the business hired me on to run the store for her. However, she was constantly talking down to me and telling me how worthless I was. She kept me from doing any managerial tasks and refused to let me in the loop with what was happening. It got so bad that I felt the need to quit when I came to work and she had taken my name off of the schedule. I left her on good terms and respectfully gave my two week notice but she decided that day would be my last there.
Being a local shop in my home town there are a lot of familar faces coming and going out of that shop. Recently I have been getting word that she is telling locals she fired me for smoking pot. Not only is that entirely unture, I have a witness to prove I left on my own terms. She is ruining my good name and I need to stop her. Is there anything I can do?

Thank you for your question. You could have a possible claim of defamation against the owner, but before pursuing a claim, you would want to know what actual harm (i.e. lost employment opportunities, lost income, etc.) you have suffered as a result of any false statements. Also, if you have witnesses that can testify that their opinion of you has changed as a result of those statements, that can be supportive of a defamation claim as well. If you gather that type of information, and want to consult about that, I would be happy to speak with you about your options.
