Is this type of demotion legal?

I was just told I am being demoted from assitant manager to cashier. There is no reason work wide. My performance is satisfactory, no write ups or complaints. The only reason is that the owner of the company I work for wants to put his friend's daughter in my position. So he is forcing my manager to demote me back to cashier. Is he really able to do this? I understand it is his company but this is totally wrong.
