Unemployment Compensation vs. Severance

Hello!

I recently lost my job in Indiana to "corporate realignmet." Can you tell me if there is a way to collect unemployment compensation before or during my severance period (18 weeks)? According to everyone I've talked to at Workforce Development, severance pay is compensation and therefore negates unemployment compensation until it runs out. Supposedly there is a case that set a precedent stating severance pay shouldn't affect unemployment benefits, but I'm not finding anything. Thanks in advance for the info!

Sorry, but you can't collect unemployment until the severance is done.
