WRONGFULLY TERMINATED

2 1/2 YEARS AGO I WAS HIRED AS A ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT. MY BOSS RECENTLY TOLD ME THAT I DO A EXCELLENT JOB BUT HE REALLY NEEDS A BOOK KEEPER ( WHICH I WAS NOT HIRED TO DO OR KNOW) AND IF HE HIRES A BOOKKEEPER HE CAN NOT AFFORD ME ANYMORE BECAUSE OF WHAT THAT PERSON WOULD HAVE TO BE PAID. HE ALSO SAID THAT PERSON COULD DO THAT AND ALSO DO MY JOB. HE ASSURED ME THAT IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MY WORK PERFORMANCE.I AM EARLY BY A 1/2 HOUR DAILY, EAT LUNCH AT MY DESK TO ANSWER THE PHONE, AND LEAVE LATE. A MAN EMPLOYEE IS LATE ALMOST DAILY, DOESN'T SHOW UP FOR DAYS WITHOUT A CALL AND WAS WRITTEN UP AND TOLD HE WOULD BE FIRED NEXT TIME HE WAS LATE OR CALLED IN. HE WAS LATE SEVERAL TIMES AFTER THIS AND DIDN'T SHOW UP NEW YEARS EVE.HE STILL HAS HIS JOB! SOME HOW THIS ALL SEEMS VERY WRONG TO ME. I GUESS IT DOESN'T PAY TO BE A EXCELLENT EMPLOYEE. DO I HAVE A LEGITIMATE COMPLAINT??

Wrongfully terminated -- Administrative Assistant for Bookkeeper

There may be sex discrimination if the man is diong similar work and is being paid similarly. In other words, they have to let someone go, but are you and he doing the same job? Could you be doing his job? Otherwise, an employer can fire an employee for any reason or no reason at all so long as it isn't a specifically illegal reason -- and what you have described does not fall into one of those categories. By the same token, you have the right to quit at any time.
