non-compete compliance

My non-compete states that I can not contact anybody who has been a client of my former firm in the last 3 years. I was one of 25 salespeople. Should I ask for a list of all of their clients for the last 3 years to make sure I do not contact? If I do I am sure they will deny the request. If they deny the request, what do I do? I am starting up a competing firm but outside the geography stated in the non-compete.

Please read the MEL archives on non-competition. This will give you a good idea about the Ohio law and its current interpretation. Also, I agree with Bruce. You should engage an attorney to give you an opinion about the specific agreement because the language of the agreement itself is of great importance. Good luck.

It seems that the agreement is a little broad, you need to have someone review the scope and then request the information that you need to have to comply with the legitimate parts of the non-compete. Also, 3 years seems a little long.
