Do I have a reasonable right to compensation?

Hello,

As a teacher at a charter school, I was written up for a comment I had made that the acting principal disagreed with. I felt that she was purposely making things difficult for me. I then requested a meeting with the management company that runs the school to discuss how I felt about the situation. They said that they were upholding the decision to write me up, at which point I agreed to let the issue go and move on. The very next day, I was terminated without any specific reference as to what I had done to deserve to be fired. There was a fight in my classroom, which she blamed me for. I believe she let me go as an act of retaliation for calling a meeting with the owners of the management company. My question is, what, if any rights do I have here? I am also fearful that they will not pay me properly for hours already earned.

I do not know if you will have a claim for retaliation. The key will be whether requesting a meeting with the owners of the company is considered "protected conduct" under the law. Unless the topic of the meeting was protected (for example, if you reported evidence that the controller was stealing government funds), merely asking to meet may not be protected.

However, an employer owes you for time worked. If you are not paid for that time, Ohio Revised Code section 4113.15 provides a remedy. Search this site for "4113.15" to learn more
