Physical Harassment -

Dear Mel,

I work on a construction site as a Superintendent. Our owner has been and continues to be physically violent with all of the male staff. I have witnessed him punching and pushing our General Superintdent around the office as well as the other Superintendents. I myself have been punched in the arm on numerous occasions, been backslapped hard enough to be pushed forward, and I weigh 185 pounds, am quite sturdy, but don't enjoy the violence. I have repeatedly asked not to manhandled in this way, but the requests have gone unheeded. What are my options other than quitting? He also has referred to other people being trouble in the firm and spoke about an ex-Vietnam vet who would take care of things if needed.

Thanks for your efforts.

workplace violence

there are laws that protect you from workplace violence, and from complaining about workplace violence. if you have injuries that result in actual bruises, you should see your local police dept. of course, the fact that something is against the law doesn't prevent someone from doing it. you have little recourse if the offender is the owner. file a complaint with cal-osha. if you are fired, you have a claim against the owner. at least you're not being beat up anymore, and will be able to collect unemployment (and possibly workers comp if you are injured).
your options are not good.
please call if you are in southern cal for a free telephone interview.
good luck
